Book cover illustration entitled ' ILLUSIONS AND DECEPTION' for the ACCESS Series Medical Textbook:
"EATING DISORDERS" by C. P. SZABO, 2009.
The image portrays a patient, usually a young woman, afflicted with an eating disorder. The illusionary deception of body image is the hallmark of this group of diseases, typically Anorexia Nervosa. As the patient faces her reflection in a mirror, her perception is distorted, separated, and different from reality. The distorted Picasso-like figure that stares back at her is deliberately used to convey the distorted body image perceived in these patients. It visually relates the underlying pathology of this deadly disease, where body perception is distinctly different from actual body type. The body language and sadness depicted in the young woman further reflects the extended emotional pain and suffering associated with the condition.
